A typical Forster Grosses Gewächs with mineral and spicy power.
The Forster Ungeheuer terroir is one of the most distinctive and best-known in the Palatinate. It produces powerful, long-keeping wines with a spicy minerality. When the Reich Chancellor, Prince Otto von Bismarck, was invited to Deidesheim in the late 1880s to stay with the Vice-President of the Reichstag, the estate’s owner Franz Armand Buhl, he said: “This monster has a monstrous taste for me”. Von Buhl is the sole owner of the Ungeheuer estate, which was used to give the VDP.Großen Lage its name.
Complex is how the soil structure of this renowned Mittelhaardt vineyard is best described. Typical sandstone weathering with denser layers of clay and sand, sometimes mixed with limestone. The basalt rock provides the vines with the necessary warmth and minerality. A massive limestone slab at a depth of around 2 metres provides a highly efficient water supply. The sum of all these factors is responsible for the thickness and length of the Ogre wines.
